  • Created a Content Management System that requires authentication for clients to have more control over the content of their website. This was expanded for an application for the Port Orford/North Curry County Chamber of Commerce to allow members to login and maintain their business and account information

  • Wrote a proposal that was one of only two picked by the Oregon State Legislature to be implemented as a pilot Marine Reserve

West Coast Groundfish Observer Program
Groundfish ObserverMarch 2007 - November 2007
The West Coast Groundfish Observer program provides trained biologists to work aboard commercial fishing vessels and produce statistically valid, fishery-dependent data of the catch. Duties:
  • Monitor for marine mammal interactions and other endangered species
  • Record fishing effort information (location, time, data, depth)
  • Estimate total catch, retained, and discarded weights
  • Sample for composition of species in the catch and document reasons for discard
  • Record weight, length, sex, and take dissections from tagged fish
  • Maintain logbook
  • Take biological samples such as sex, length, otolith, and tissues
Highlights:
  • Created an online, anonymous survey for observers

Data Collection:
  • Navigating small boats in estuaries
  • Conduct conductivity, turbidity, and depth (CTD) scans
  • Collect fish, water, and sediment samples
  • On-boat underwater video collection
Laboratory Analysis:
  • Identification of invertebrates using a dissecting microscope
  • Analysis of total suspended solids (TSS) and grain size (GSA)
  • Computer analysis of CTD scans
  • View underwater video for later analysis
Other:
  • Long days beginning early in the morning, extended travel, diligence to tide charts and weather reports, and using GPS to navigate to collection site were required
  • Quality Control of entered data, from spreadsheets and databases
