About Lotus
From the time she was a little girl staring at the endless Kansas prairies, owner Alicia Billings wanted to live on the ocean. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and finally got her chance. In July of 2001, she packed up and went off to work for a contractor for the National Marine Fisheries Service on commercial fishing boats in the Bering Sea (that's Alaska, by the way). Three month contracts working and living aboard vessels was a great way to save up some cash, and lose your mind. Years and years later, she found herself living in Port Orford, Oregon, a sleepy fishing town with a population of 1200, on a good day. While she was doing the same work she was doing in Alaska, the off-time was monotonous.
Lotus Web Design and Consulting was started in 2007 as a way for her to practice her new love of building databases and to stave off the boredom. At first, the business was mainly a way to get in on some consulting jobs during the off-season while also being able to bid for web design jobs. Now it has become a way to provide a much needed service to non-profit organizations that cannot pay big bucks for websites.
